Addition and Subtraction Reflection Wall

We have been learning to solve problems in different ways. After finding out new strategies, we have been reflecting on how useful they are to help us solve certain problems both mentally and in written form. Most agreed algorithms are easy with a pen and paper, but they are harder to solve in your head.

We discussed that algorithms, while helpful in finding the answer, don't really make us think.

One student shared his strategy and taught others how to solve problems using it.

Another student who was counting forward or backward to solve problems upon reflection stated that it is probably not that helpful when using larger numbers.

After exploring rounding we decided that by rounding the smaller number you can solve problems more easily. Students tested both ways but all agreed that roundjng the larger number did not really help! "Too hard doing the ones column" said a student!
